With Caesar approaching Rome, Pullo and Vorenus lead an advance party to scout out the level of resistance they might meet. In Rome, Pompey Magnus must decide how to meet the forthcoming threat, even though Caesar seems to have only one Legion with him. To everyone's surprise, Pompey decides to stage a tactical retreat south with the intent to gather his forces and then re-take city. Romans are forced to take sides with anyone staying behind declared a traitor. As a result of the evacuation, Pullo and Vorenus find the city virtually deserted. Vorenus decides to pack it in and return to his home. Pullo on the other makes a quite interesting find of his own. Atia meanwhile takes decisive action when she learns that her daughter Octavia is secretly seeing her husband.

As they try to reach Caesar in Greece, the shipwrecked Vorenus and Pullo confront an unexpected dilemma. Back in Rome, Atia again sends Octavia to beg protection from Servilia, who complies readily to encourage her growing friendship with Octavia. As they prepare their counterattack against Caesar, Pompey's Republicans begin to squabble over both the anticipated spoils and the method of finishing Caesar off. Niobe's sister Lyde comes back to see her and comforts her over Vorenus's disappearance. Badly outnumbered, Caesar and Antony make their stand at Pharsalus. On his arrival in Egypt, Pompey is greeted by a Roman veteran.

Caesar pursued Pompey to Greece but the tide has turned and it's Caesar who is on the run. He contacts Mark Antony, who he left in charge in Rome, to come and join him with the 13th Legion but Antony seems to be in no hurry. Vorenus has re-enlisted in Antony's Legion and he and Niobe have begun to renew their marital relationship. The presence of Niobe's sister is the only sour note in their house. Pullo meanwhile continues to train young Octavian in the use of arms and the boy's mother Atia is so pleased with his development that she decides he should take another step to manhood and orders Pullo to take him to a brothel so he can have his first sexual experience. Atia also continues with her scheming ways and believing that Caesar is done for, decides she had better make friends with Servilia.

The episode opens with Lister in an uncharacteristically depressed mood; he tells Cat and Rimmer that he hates his life on Red Dwarf. During the conversation, Rimmer reminisces about a former schoolmate, Thickie Holden, who despite being one of the stupidest boys in class went on to earn an immense fortune with an invention called the "tension sheet". Meanwhile, while working in the ship's darkroom, Kryten discovers that a mutated batch of developing fluid produces photographs that are windows to the past, and slide projections that one can step into (albeit only within the confines of the photo). After a quick trip to Frank Rimmer's wedding and to an Adolf Hitler speech, Lister goes back in time and changes history by giving Thickie Holden's invention to his 17-year-old self. This creates unforseen changes in the present; Cat and Kryten disappear, leaving Arnold Rimmer alone with Holly. Rimmer visits Lister, hoping to persuade him to come back to Red Dwarf; Lister, however – now living in a mansion with a supermodel – fails to recognise him, and tells the butler to throw him out. Rimmer then decides to go still further back in time to give the idea for the tension sheet to his childhood self first. Rimmer's plan is foiled when Thickie Holden overhears Rimmer's conversation with his younger self, and takes the invention for himself. Upon returning to the present, everything is put back exactly the way it was - with the sole exception that Rimmer is now alive, not a hologram. Delighted, he rushes out into a corridor and accidentally blows himself up.
